Originally from Maui Hawaii, Micah spent much of his musical life exploring various styles of performance. Micah played with a variety of groups and artists in the United States and has collaborated with various composers to broaden the boundaries of flute repertoire and technique. His professional experience includes playing with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Knoxville Wind Symphony, and Symphony of the Mountains.
In 2009, Micah served as Assistant Music Director of the Oak Ridge Youth Symphony Orchestra in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Micah joined music director Rachel Grubb to establish a true musical outlet for the community.
Micah Layne has studied with Dr. Shelley Binder at the University of Tennessee School of Music in Knoxville, Tennessee and with Dr. John Barcellona at California State University Long Beach Cole Conservatory of Music in Long Beach, California, and privately with Dr. Susan Stockhammer.

Four flutes to play test!
In this video, I had the opportunity to play test for flutes at one time by a single owner. This is a great opportunity for flutists in our community to hear different combinations of head joints and instruments played by the same person.

Does this method hurt if there is gold plating on the headjoint? Also would love to know have you remove the tarnish from the keys and rods.
Hi, thanks for the question. Gold plating should not tarnish so it wouldn’t need this kind of procedure. All of the flutes I repair are tons of work to thoroughly disassemble and clean. Think of making a fine watch. It’s order of operations plus the patience of a saint
Since there is no way to remove the embouchure plate, will it damage the gold plating? The rest of the headjoint is solid silver.

How old is that piccolo? All they make now is wooden if I'm not mistaking. I have a 1922 Haynes commercial closed flute that I just love.

how to put the cork back in ?
Carefully. Given the tapered shape of the silver tube, the cork assembly is inserted from the bottom always which is the largest side. I gave a video in one of the comments here

I know this is an old video, but do you know if this method would work on a silver plated headjoint that has a rose gold plated lip plate and crown?
I also own a Delusse by Bernolin. I LOVE the sound that you produce on it. (Much more than the 5 keyed flute). I think you are much more agile on the Delusse than the other instrument.
Thank you! I’ve always been able to jump around from one instrument to the next my whole life. As a flute technician, I’ve played on almost every flute make and model over the years. In the end, there are just some instruments that fit a player like a glove. It’s a challenge on older instruments to get them to sound a certain way I think because they are happy being what they are. I just ask them for permission before playing and we get along fine!
